The Difference Between A Condenser And A Dynamic Microphone

The two most commonly used microphones in a home recording studio used today are condenser microphones and dynamic microphones, but what are the differences between these two microphones, and what can they be used for?

A condenser microphone is a microphone which uses a diaphragm as part of a capacitor which is moved by the vibrations pushing into the microphone from the source, an instrument or voice. The vibrations moves between the plates and the distance between them determines what sound is caught.

Condenser microphones are often used to record non-voice information, such as instruments or sound effects, if they are used for recording purposes.
Dynamic microphones can be found at just about any live music or speaking venue you may have been to, from the rock arena to the church pulpit. A dynamic microphone uses electromagnetic conduction to capture sound. These microphones are generally seen in the hand-held variety public speakers, singers, and performers often use.

The major difference between dynamic and condenser microphones is quality. When it comes to recording, high-end condenser microphones provide a warmer more analog sound. While the recording process may change the sound later, the initial tracking with a condenser microphone will bring out an instruments tone and timbre much more clearly than a dynamic microphone.

On the other hand, condenser microphones are much more delicate than the more robust and sealed in dynamic microphone. In addition, a high quality dynamic microphone, is a good deal less expensive than their more fragile counterpart.

Both condenser and dynamic microphone have their purpose and serve that purpose well. When the time comes to do what needs to be done, it as ultimately important to know which you will want and what its strengths and weaknesses are.

the main difference between dynamic and condenser microphone IS NOT quality. It is what they are used for. Michael Jackson's Thriller and a lot of U2 stuff was recorded on dynamic mics and also basically every guitar cab is recorded on dynamic.

The second half of this article is utter nonsense. Anyone reading this who wants to learn anything should ignore it completely.
